Last Saturday, Mighty Wanderers ended its 8-year wait for the TNM Super League Championship, claiming the title in the 2025 season with a game to spare and opening a five-point gap over second-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

One of the key factors in driving Wanderers’ success in the current campaign is Dalitso Khungwa’s stellar performance between the posts.

The former Mighty Tigers and Chitipa United shot-stopper has kept 17 clean sheets in 21 games, helping the Nomads to concede just 12 goals in 29 matches overall. Khungwa’s rise to glory is a testament to his hard work, patience and determination.

Having arrived at Wanderers in 2023, Khungwa was initially the third-choice goalkeeper behind William Thole and Richard Chipuwa. However, he was handed several opportunities in 2024, keeping three consecutive clean sheets and earning the coach’s trust to start in the Blantyre Derby against Bullets in the FDH Bank Cup.

He was replaced just before the half hour-mark after conceding two goals in the Nomads 2-1 defeat to be knocked out of the cup.

Prior to the start of the 2025 season, Khungwa had to fight for a place in the starting team following the departure of William Thole and went toe-to-toe with newly signed Chancy Mtete and Chipuwa again.

Unfortunately, his costly error in the Charity shield loss to Silver Strikers also diffused his confidence and lost his place in the team when the League campaign kicked off.

Khungwa could not blow another chance again after some games of being sidelined and brilliance has been instrumental in Wanderers’ title charge.

He’s won two Player of the Month awards and has already won the Golden Glove award with a game to go, leading his nearest rival, George Chikooka of Silver Strikers, by three clean sheets despite playing 7 games fewer.

With an 81 percent clean sheet percentage, Khungwa has cemented his place as one of the league’s top goalkeepers as his competitors are at 50 percent cleen sheet percentages.

He could also equal Chikooka’s last season record of 18 cleansheet if he will not concede on the final day of the league when he faces Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday.

Khungwa’s redemption story is a highlight of Wanderers’ title-winning campaign. His heroics have helped the Nomads clinch their 7th league title, marking the beginning of a new era at the club.
