Mighty Mukuru Wanderers is considered as one of the big teams in Malawi.
Statistics indicate that Wanderers and Bullets are the most two top teams in Malawi in terms of numbers and trophies won.
As such, Wanderers fans expect the team to struggle only with Bullets and not other teams. It is because of this reason that the team changes coaches as soon as it feels like they are not delivering.
This season the team has not been doing well in the League despite reaching the Sami-Finals of FDH Cup and also despite winning a friendly trophy in Dowa against Kamuzu Barracks during the launch of Champions Stadium in Dowa.
For the first time in so many years, Wanderers are 16 points behind Bullets and are on position 4 despite that it is second round of the elite league despite securing a sponsorship deal with Mukuru.
These statistics prompted the management to make some changes in the technical panel that was led by Eddington Ng’onamo with Josephy Kwamwendo as the Assistant Coach.
Josephy Kamwendo was demoted to Reserve side while Alex Ngwira a former Mzuni FC and Chitipa United coach was appointed as head coach and Eddington Ng’onamo was made Technical Director.
Many Wanderers diehards and soccer analysts questioned his appointment citing that he has never won any silverware and it was a grave mistake to let him lead such a big team.
Some circles even questioned if he has any “Blue blood” in his veins.
Well, it was a done deal still.
His first assignment was a very tough game against Dedza Dynamos in the FDH round of 16 encounter at Dedza Stadium.
Regarding Dedza Dynamos’ good run this season that even saw them booting out Silver Stadium from FDH cup at Dedza stadium, many doubted if Wanderers with a new coach will pass the “graveyard” (pa manda). Many people consider Dedza Stadium as a death trap.
After full time, it was Dedza 0-3 Wanderers thanks to Yamikani Chester, Alfred Manyozo and Vincent Nyangulu for the goals.
Many people said it was a fluke win for the coach and some even said it was because he found the team already built towards the game.
His next assignment was rather a tougher one. Blantyre Derby
His first derby and this time he was meeting a Bullets side that has lost no game so far in this season.
Many believed this is where he will be exposed.
75minutes on the clock….Bullets were leading comfortably 3-1.
Wanderer were exposed in all departments on the afternoon. People started to convince themselves that Ngwira’s win in Dedza was a fluke.
Some fans were seen leaving the stadium hopelessly.
Alex Ngwira was hopeful on the touchline….instructing his boys to push on. He made 5 changes that changed everything. He studied the game well.
3-3 was the score line after 90 minutes and Wanderers were on fire that had it been few more minutes were added, they could have gotten the results.
Meanwhile, all doubters clapped hands and praised Ngwira and of course the players for the results.
It was obvious that his changes contributed to the results… He introduced fast football and the use of wingers while closing the midfield. Analysts applauded him and some even said may be he should be left to make his own decisions when it comes to team selection.
His third game was against Kamuzu Barracks in the FDH quater final at Kamuzu Stadium.
Having gained the confidence and studied his players in the previous games, Alex’s superb tactics were observed the whole game as Wanderers easily scored 4 against KB to reach the sami-finals of the FDH cup.
His football philosophy of aggressive attacking football is rewarding the decision makers who brought him on board.
But he has another tough assignment ahead. Another Blantyre Derby.
This time it is FDH semi-final.
Nyasa Big Bullets Vs Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
Of course he will have to go back to Dedza before that to face Dedza Dynamos again.
Many are asking is he the promised one to turn the tables at the Lali Lubani?
