Mighty Mukuru Wanderers squeezed through to the FDH Bank Cup round of 16 with a 4-1 penalty shootout win over Kamuzu Barracks Reserve after the Young Troopers fought back from 2-0 down in a thriller at Kamuzu Stadium.
The Nomads survived a second-half KB Reserve’s comeback to win 4-1on penalties after a 2-2 draw and set up a FDH Bank Cup round of 16 with Dedza Dynamos FC.
The Lali-Lubani outfit had raced ahead with two goals before the Halftime break from Felix Zulu and Misheck Botomani.
The first chance for Mukuru boys fell on Vitumbiko Kumwenda whose shot was blocked haplessly by Misheck Botomani. On the ninth minute, Felix Zulu bend his effort towards the top corner of Joshua Waka’s goal to give the hosts an early lead. Just after half-a-hour mark, Vitumbiko Kumwenda assisted Misheck Botomani to double Wanderers’ lead before the break.
The Nomads’ technical panel made the first substitution just after the break; Mohammad Sulumba and Francis Mulimbika were introduced to replace Vitumbiko Kumwenda and Joseph Balakasi respectively.
Kamuzu Barracks Reserve looked to get straight back into the game during the early minutes of the second half when Marshall Maluwa pulled one back for the visitors.
Kamuzu Barracks Reserve were constantly knocking on the door; no wonder, John Banda scored an equaliser on 73th minute.
Felix Zulu looked like being the man to unlock Kamuzu Barracks Reserve backline again with ten minutes to go, but goalkeeper Joshua Waka denied all Wanderers efforts.
Both sides really went for it in the closing stages although non of them created any clear chance that would have won it within the regular 90 minutes.
Nomads’ skipper; Stanley Sanudi opened penalty shoot outs by scoring a beauty from the spot kick. Kamuzu Barracks Reserve scored only one from the three penalties they took while Wanderers scored all of their next three penalties through Muhammad Sulumba, Vincent Nyangulu and Francis Mlimbika.
